Mindfulness and Creativity

What Is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is defined as, “a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique.” As artists, sometimes we can get wrapped up in the hustle and bustle of modern life. The constant drive to achieve and pursue results each day can overwhelm our connection with our inner creative impulses.

Mindfulness and Creativity

What’s interesting is that practicing mindfulness is very much like conducting an acting exercise. Inspiration in the craft of acting comes through when we slow down our thoughts, allowing ourselves to experience the sensations in our body and opening up to the power of the present moment. Taking the time to practice this in our daily lives can open up unexpected possibilities. It doesn't need to be elaborate: whether sitting quietly, journaling, or simply breathing and embracing the present moment, these small acts can profoundly impact how we navigate our entire day.

Catching The Big Fish

The renowned film director and artist, David Lynch, is very open about his commitment to the practice of Transcendental Meditation. In this delightful little book, Lynch shares his philosophy about the nature of creativity, how it connects to our consciousness, and how mindfulness and meditation can deepen our relationship to creativity. In today's fast-paced world, we often neglect dedicated time to muse with our inner senses. Finding your own way to practice mindfulness each day can be transformative.

All my best,
